Here’s how we restored and recreated a traditional Devon hedge-bank on our LLP land.
The Lennon Legacy Project (LLP) – known as ‘Barn Owl Heaven’ – is our nature reserve managed for Barn Owls on the edge of Dartmoor.
- Spoil from nearby pond excavation was laid along the old hedgebank line.
- ‘Banking-up’ started in early January 2008.
- Turf was removed from one side…
- …then the other…
- …and the bank was turf-faced.
- The banking-up was nearly finished by the end of January 2008.
- Our contractor started the fencing in March 2008.
- The posts were laid out…
- …and were in place by the end of April.
- Stock-proof wire fencing was next.
- The bank was planted up with hedgerow tree whips.
- It was all finished by May 2008.
- By summer 2009 wild flowers were well estabished.
- This is how it looked at 2 years old (spring 2010).
- Autumn 2011. Amazingly, every one of the young ‘whips’ had survived.
- Seven years old (winter 2014/15)
